Chikashi Suzuki was born in Chiba, Japan, in 1972. He becomes interested in photography at the end of the 1980s, while photographing his family and friends with a little secondhand Pentax. An admirer of the work of Joseph Beuys, who studied economics at university, Chikashi decided to follow the same path. In the middle of the 90s he discovered the photographs of Anders Edström in a catalog published for an exhibition entitled L’Hiver de l’Amour (at the Museum of Modern art in Paris, in February 1994). Anders’ spontaneous style impressed him and he saw himself in this way of approaching photography. It’s this encounter that made him realize it was possible to freely express his own style, as well as his introduction to early issues of Purple in the late 1990s, contributing for the first time to Purple Fiction in 1997. Chikashi Suzuki loves to document contemporary life in Tokyo with the desire to make us feel what really goes on in his country. He is a passionate fan of music, never listening to music with headphones in the street and never while taking photographs, but admits to thinking of photography during the many concerts he attends. And his impressive portraits of musicians are many (see in this issue, Bernie Worrell’s portrait, page 78). Extremely conscious of light, color, urban landscapes, architecture, portraits, plants, insects… He loves above all else to vary his subjects making each photograph the expression of a unique experience. - Purple Gallery
