Blow-Up

Blow-Up (1966) is a controversial British-Italian film directed by Michelangelo Antonioni that examines the existential nature of reality through photography. The film tells the story of Thomas, a successful yet cynical and jaded fashion photographer in London who uncovers evidence of a possible murder in the background of a series of pictures he’s taken in a park.

“As Thomas moves between his darkroom and the blowups, we recognize the bliss of an artist lost in what behaviorists call the Process; he is not thinking now about money, ambition or his own nasty personality defects, but is lost in his craft. His mind, hands and imagination work in rhythmic sync. He is happy.” - Ebert

Density Drawings

km-pr
We featured Katja’s photography work a little while ago and were blown away. She kindly let us know of her first solo exhibition, titled Density Drawings. A great concept - wish we could attend.

Katja Mater’s work originates from a meta-perspective and confronts the possibilities and impossibilities of photography. Rather than documenting frozen moments in time, the artist records the numerous ways we can look at and think about photographic images. She turns the medium on itself, and in doing so, disturbs its status of accuracy. Instead of looking through photography as a transparent medium, Mater’s intention is to make viewers look at photography itself. By visualizing areas in which technique yields images different from human perception she shows the intangible character of the medium, using photography as a creating rather than a documenting medium.

In the series ʻDensity Drawingsʼ Mater ‘draws’ with the camera. She constructs an image on a negative by layering multiple moments in time: while making the drawing, she shoots exposures at different moments during the process on the same negative. The artist literally builds up an image on the negative, while in reality the drawing blacks out. It is a cross-exchange of the visual information; between the marker on paper, and the film in the camera. Bit by bit a photographically complex image evolves, in which the two disciplines become inextricably interwoven. The resulting image is impossible to capture with human eye.

Carry-On

“You can make something (or make something happen) anywhere at anytime in any circumstance. These words are not a banal and furthermore sloppy translation of the American Dream, but the principle that David Horvitz, artist and chronicler, is applying in his work. At West, he is presenting his first solo exhibition in the Netherlands, including a multi-artist project that he organized, as well as photographs, paintings, video, publications, and ephemera.

Carry–On (2010) is a multi-artist project organized by the young artist and integrated in his show at West. Horvitz asked a number of artists to pass one of their works to him, which he then carried to The Hague in his carry-on luggage. In transit, the works were never left alone, not even for a moment. By carrying the objects with him continuously, he takes full responsibility.
Horvitz will also present the video Newly Found Bas Jan Ader Film (2006) in a new installation. The video, originally uploaded to Youtube, had gotten Horvitz into a little bit of trouble in Los Angeles. In the third room of West, Horvitz’s vast publishing career will be presented. This includes books, zines, vinyl records, newspapers, posters, and magazines. Also included will be a few of his previous multi-artist projects, which could be close to the work and contributions by 100 other artists.

Organizing and exhibiting multi-artist projects is part of Horvitz’s practice as an artist. He creates a framework to distribute, reproduce, and display other artists’ work. For him, this framework is his work.”

“Brion Nuda Rosch’s work is inviting yet unpredictable. His diverse combinations of materials gently lead viewers to unexpected discoveries. These deceptively simple works present humorously profound situations- Rosch’s simple act of placing one image of a waterfall on top of another complicates pictorial space, subject-object hierarchy, and combinative logic. Such playful sleight of hand pervades most of his works, and adds a wink to the deep resonances that they evoke. Neither reclusive obsessions nor simply vehicles for expression, Rosch’s works function as signposts and touchstones of his own investigation into his singular understanding of the world.
